Flanges

Flanges are mechanical components used to connect pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment in piping systems, providing a secure, leak-proof joint that can be easily assembled and disassembled. Typically circular in shape, flanges are bolted together and sealed with a gasket between the mating surfaces to prevent leakage. They are made from various materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, and sometimes plastic, depending on the application and the type of fluid or gas being transported. Common types of flanges include weld neck, slip-on, blind, socket weld, and lap joint, each suited for different pressure levels, temperatures, and installation needs.

Types of Flanges

Threaded Flanges

Threaded flanges, also known as screwed flanges, are a type of pipe flange designed to be connected to piping systems without the need for welding. Instead of welding, the internal bore of the flange is threaded, allowing it to be screwed directly onto a pipe with matching external threads. This makes installation and removal easy, especially in systems where welding is not feasible or safe, such as in explosive environments. Threaded flanges are typically used in low-pressure and non-cyclic applications, and they are commonly found in industries like plumbing, water treatment, and oil and gas. They are made from materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel, and are available in various pressure ratings (usually up to Class 600).

Weldneck Flanges

Weld neck flanges are high-strength pipe flanges designed for use in high-pressure and high-temperature applications. They are easily identified by their long tapered hub, which gradually transitions from the flange thickness to the pipe wall thickness. This design provides excellent stress distribution and reduces the risk of flange failure under heavy loads or fluctuating pressure conditions. Weld neck flanges are butt-welded to the pipe, creating a strong, leak-proof joint that is ideal for critical piping systems in industries such as oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, and shipbuilding.

Slip On Flanges

Slip-on flanges are a type of pipe flange designed to slide over the end of a pipe and then be welded in place, both inside and outside, to provide a secure, leak-proof connection. They are widely used in low to moderate pressure and temperature applications due to their ease of alignment and installation. Slip-on flanges have a low-profile design and are slightly larger in diameter than the pipe, which allows for easy fitting and welding. These flanges are typically used in systems where welding is required but where stress on the flange is relatively low, such as in cooling water, firefighting lines, and low-pressure pipelines in the oil, gas, and chemical industries.

Socket Weld Flanges

Socket weld flanges are a type of pipe flange designed for use with small-diameter, high-pressure piping systems. They feature a recessed area (or socket) into which the pipe is inserted before being welded around the outer edge, creating a strong and leak-resistant joint. This design ensures proper alignment and smooth flow, making socket weld flanges ideal for pipelines where cleanliness and structural integrity are important. Commonly used in chemical processing, oil and gas, and power generation industries, these flanges are especially suitable for applications involving high pressure and limited space.

Blind Flanges

Blind flanges are solid, round plates used to close the ends of piping systems, valves, or pressure vessel openings. Unlike other types of flanges, blind flanges have no center hole, making them ideal for isolating sections of a pipeline or sealing off unused nozzles. They are typically bolted to a matching flange and sealed with a gasket to ensure a leak-proof closure. Blind flanges are commonly used in high-pressure and high-temperature applications across industries such as oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, and water treatment. Available in a variety of materials—such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel—they can withstand harsh environments and demanding conditions.

Lap Joint Flanges

Lap Joint Flanges (LJFs) are specialized components in piping systems, comprising two parts: a stub end welded to the pipe and a loose backing flange that slides over the stub end. This design allows the flange to rotate, facilitating easy alignment of bolt holes and simplifying installation and maintenance processes. LJFs are particularly beneficial in applications requiring frequent disassembly, such as in chemical processing plants, food and pharmaceutical industries, and marine environments. They offer advantages like cost-effectiveness, ease of alignment, and suitability for corrosive environments. However, they are generally not recommended for high-pressure applications due to their design limitations.
